Baron von Steuben is remembered as one of the key military leaders who helped transform George Washington’s Continental Army during the American Revolution. This special library program will explore his remarkable life, military legacy, and the growing historical discussion surrounding his personal relationships and identity through the lens of LGBTQ+ history. Using primary sources, historical interpretation, and modern scholarship, the program will examine how historians approach questions of identity in the 18th century while highlighting von Steuben’s enduring impact on the fight for American independence. Perfect for history enthusiasts, educators, and community members interested in Revolutionary War history and inclusive storytelling during the nation’s 250th anniversary commemorations.

Guests at this program will also enjoy a fun Revolutionary War–themed coloring art project featuring a historical image inspired by Baron von Steuben and the era, making this an engaging and welcoming community event for library patrons and history lovers alike during the nation’s 250th anniversary commemorations.
